Abstract

Background: Refillable drinking water has become a widely used alternative among the public because it is considered more efficient and affordable. However, if the management process does not comply with hygiene and sanitation standards, refillable drinking water is at risk of being contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria, which can cause diarrhea. Objective: To analyze the management of refillable drinking water in relation to its bacteriological quality (Escherichia coli) in the Kacang Pedang Community Health Center (UPTD Puskesmas) area. Methods: This study employed a qualitative descriptive design. The study subjects were all 6 drinking water depots, with a total of 12 drinking water samples collected. Data were collected through laboratory testing for Escherichia coli content using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method and in-depth interviews. Findings: Laboratory test results showed that none of the 12 refilled drinking water samples contained Escherichia coli (0/100 ml). The facility inspection revealed that the depots were clean, and no vectors or pests were found. Regarding equipment, the storage of raw water, filtration, disinfection using ultraviolet (UV) light, rinsing, filling, and sealing of the water jugs were all carried out in accordance with hygiene and sanitation procedures. Implications: The management of refillable drinking water in the area served by the Kacang Pedang Community Health Center (UPTD Puskesmas), as assessed in terms of Escherichia coli levels, facilities, and equipment, has met the bacteriological quality requirements for drinking water as stipulated in Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023; therefore, the drinking water produced is safe for consumption.
