Abstract

Background: Temporary Waste Storage Sites (TPS) in residential areas may become a source of odor nuisance that reduces community living comfort. Local evidence integrating geolocation-based distance with odor perception in Bandar Lampung remains limited. Objective: To analyze the association between residential distance, perception of waste odor, and community living comfort around the Rajabasa Main TPS. Methods: A quantitative analytic study with cross-sectional design was conducted in Gedong Meneng, Rajabasa Sub-district, Bandar Lampung, in 2026. Seventy household heads within a 300-m radius of the TPS were selected purposively. Distances from each residence to the TPS were computed from geographic coordinates using the Haversine formula (great-circle distance) and categorised as near (0–100 m), moderate (101–200 m), and far (>200 m). Odor perception and living comfort were measured using a closed questionnaire with tested validity (Pearson r>0.361; N=30) and reliability. Bivariate analysis used the Chi-Square test (α=0.05) with Cramer's V and Phi as effect-size measures. Results: Fifty respondents (71.4%) felt disturbed by the odor and 32 (45.7%) reported discomfort. A significant association was found between distance and comfort (χ²=27.63; df=2; p<0.001; Cramer's V=0.628) and between odor perception and comfort (χ²=23.58; df=1; p<0.001; Phi=0.580). Conclusion: Residential distance and odor perception were significantly associated with living comfort. Optimising TPS management and odor control may support local achievement of SDG target 11.6.
