Abstract

Background: Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) is recommended as an important component of care for preterm and low-birth-weight (LBW) infants. Successful implementation requires parental involvement, adequate knowledge, and maternal psychological readiness. A video-based parent-training approach may provide consistent information while preparing mothers to participate in KMC. Objective: To analyze changes in maternal knowledge of KMC and anxiety before and after a video-based KMC parent-training program among mothers of LBW infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods: A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Thirty-five mothers of LBW infants were recruited using total sampling. KMC knowledge was assessed using a modified 19-item questionnaire (Cronbach's alpha=0.752), while anxiety was measured using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7; alpha=0.742 in this study). Pre-post categorical changes were analyzed using the Marginal Homogeneity test; numerical scores are presented descriptively as mean±SD. Results: The proportion of mothers with good knowledge increased from 25.7% to 80.0% after the intervention (p=0.001). The proportion with minimal/mild anxiety increased from 34.3% to 74.3%, reflecting a reduction in moderate/severe anxiety (p=0.003). Mean knowledge scores increased from 63.4±9.1 to 84.7±8.3, while mean GAD-7 scores decreased from 11.8±3.4 to 7.2±3.1. Conclusion: Video-based KMC parent training was associated with increased maternal knowledge and reduced anxiety after the intervention. Because the study did not include a control group, the findings represent preliminary pre-post evidence and should not be interpreted as definitive causal evidence.
