Abstract

Background Junk food consumption among school-age children requires attention because excessive consumption may have adverse effects on health. Digital media-based nutrition education can be an approach to delivering health information that is appropriate for school-age children. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effect of digital nutrition education about junk food on the knowledge and attitudes of school-age children in Ngemplik Wetan Village, Karanganyar, Demak. Methods: This quantitative study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The respondents were 34 students of SDN Ngemplik Wetan from grades II, III, IV, and V. Data were collected using knowledge and attitude questionnaires before and after the intervention. The intervention consisted of a 10-minute educational video about junk food, followed by continued viewing of the educational video at home for seven days. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 4.94 ± 0.74 before the intervention to 8.00 ± 0.82 after the intervention, with median scores of 5.00 [4.00–5.25] and 8.00 [7.00–9.00], respectively. The Wilcoxon test showed Z = -5.088, p < 0.001, and an effect size (r) of 0.87. The mean attitude score increased from 68.06 ± 13.56 to 77.44 ± 21.19, with median scores of 71.00 [63.25–76.25] and 82.50 [69.00–93.25], respectively. The Wilcoxon test showed Z = -5.088, p < 0.001, and an effect size (r) of 0.87. Conclusion: Digital nutrition education about junk food demonstrated a significant improvement in the knowledge and attitudes of school-age children, with a very large effect size. Video-based digital education may be considered as an alternative nutrition education medium in schools and can be integrated into routine health education activities involving school health personnel, healthcare providers, and parents to reinforce information about healthier food choices.
