Abstract

Lumbar Spinal Injury can cause various pathological abnormalities, such as compression fractures, burst fractures, and compression of neurological structures that may lead to permanent neurological deficits. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the imaging modalities frequently used in Spinal Injury cases because it provides detailed visualization of soft tissues and the spinal cord. Several studies have reported the use of T1-weighted (T1W), T2-weighted (T2W), Short Tau Inversion Recovery (STIR), and Fast Field Echo (FFE) sequences in MRI examinations of spinal injuries. However, the MRI protocol at the Radiology Department of West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Hospital utilizes T1W-TSE, T2W TSE, T2W-SPIR, and myelography sequences without the routine use of the FFE sequence. This study aimed to analyze the MRI examination procedure of the Lumbosacral Vertebrae in Spinal Injury cases and to determine the reasons for not routinely using the FFE sequence. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach. Data were collected through observation, structured interviews, and documentation. The respondents consisted of three radiographers and three radiologists involved in MRI examinations. The results showed that the FFE sequence has not been included as a routine sequence in MRI examinations of Lumbosacral Spinal Injury cases at West Nusa Tenggara Provincial Hospital, but is used as an additional sequence based on specific clinical indications. This sequence is beneficial for detecting hemorrhage due to its sensitivity to susceptibility effects; however, it is not routinely applied because most cases examined do not present indications of hemorrhage, and the sequence may produce artifacts that can reduce image quality.
