Abstract

Postoperative pain is one of the most common complaints among patients undergoing orthopedic surgery and may interfere with comfort, mobilization, and recovery. Music therapy is a non-pharmacological intervention that can provide relaxation and distraction effects to reduce pain perception. This study aimed to analyze the effect of music therapy on postoperative pain among orthopedic surgery patients at dr. R. Goeteng Taroenadibrata Regional General Hospital, Purbalingga. This study used a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 36 respondents were recruited using purposive sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. Pain intensity was measured using the Numeric Rating Scale. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann-Whitney Test. The mean age of respondents was 39.75±9.28 years, with a predominance of female respondents. There was a significant reduction in pain intensity in the intervention group after music therapy (p<0.001). The control group also showed a significant reduction in pain intensity after receiving standard care (p<0.001). However, the decrease in pain intensity differed significantly between groups, indicating that music therapy provided an additional benefit in postoperative pain management. Music therapy can be considered a complementary non-pharmacological intervention for postoperative orthopedic patients.
