Abstract

Effective communication between nurses during the handover process is a crucial component in supporting continuity of care and patient safety in inpatient wards. However, incomplete, unstructured, and inaccurate information is still common, potentially leading to miscommunication in nursing care. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Mini SBAR optimization on handover communication compliance and nurses' perceptions and compliance with patient safety indicators measured in inpatient wards. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest. The sample consisted of 80 nurses (n=80) working in inpatient wards, selected using a purposive sampling technique. The intervention was conducted through training and implementation of Mini SBAR for four weeks. Data analysis used a paired t-test with a significance level of α = 0.05 and effect size calculations. The study showed increased communication compliance across all Mini SBAR components, with average total compliance increasing from 37.3% before the intervention to 81.3% after. Improvements were also found in patient safety indicators: perception of adverse event risk prevention increased from 55.0% to 70.0%, timeliness of nursing actions from 60.0% to 78.8%, and communication effectiveness from 42.5% to 83.8%. The paired t-test results showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.001), with a large effect size. Optimizing Mini SBAR has the potential to be a strategy for improving the quality of handover communication in inpatient nursing practice.
