Abstract

The phenomenon of fatherlessness due to the death of a father can cause psychological impacts that continue until early adulthood, such as sadness, loss of security, changes in economic conditions, and difficulties in dealing with developmental demands. Nevertheless, individuals still have the potential to develop hope as a psychological strength in facing life's challenges. This study aims to find out the picture of hope in early adult individuals who experience fatherlessness due to the death of their father in Medan City based on aspects of goals, pathways thinking, and agency thinking according to Snyder. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The study subjects consisted of two early adults aged 18–30 years who were selected through purposive sampling. Data is collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The results showed that both participants still had hope despite losing their father figure. The first participant cultivates hope through clear life goals, solutions to obstacles, and family support. The second participant built hope through complex adaptations due to economic change and negative interpersonal experiences, but was helped by social support and self-reflection. These findings confirm that hope is dynamic, developing according to life experiences, goals, achievement strategies, motivation, and social support obtained.
