Abstract

The Bitung Ocean Fishing Port (PPS Bitung) is a coastal area with high vessel activity, making it a potential source of heavy metal contamination in surrounding waters. Squid, as a widely consumed marine organism, is vulnerable to heavy metal accumulation through bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes. This study aimed to analyze the content of heavy metals arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in squid from the waters of PPS Bitung and compare the results with the maximum contamination limits set by BPOM Regulation No. 9 of 2022. This was an observational study with a cross-sectional design. Samples consisted of 3 squid specimens collected from 3 different points at Pier T of PPS Bitung, analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) at BARISTAND Manado. Results showed arsenic (As) concentrations ranging from 1.14 to 2.08 mg/kg, with samples from point II (2.08 mg/kg) and point III (2.01 mg/kg) exceeding the BPOM maximum limit of 2.0 mg/kg. Cadmium (Cd) concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 0.08 mg/kg and lead (Pb) from 0.04 to 0.08 mg/kg, both below the maximum limit of 0.30 mg/kg. Squid from two sampling points did not meet food safety requirements based on the arsenic parameter, while cadmium and lead parameters across all samples remained within safe limits.
