Abstract

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen, which has persisted for more than a decade, has produced profound multidimensional consequences for children's psychosocial development. However, large-scale empirical syntheses examining its impact on child mental health remain limited. This study aimed to quantify the effects of the Yemeni humanitarian crisis on children's mental health through a random-effects meta-analysis of 47 studies involving a total of 12,487 child participants published between 2015 and 2024. The findings revealed a pooled prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of 68.3% (95% CI: 63.7–72.9%), depression of 54.2% (95% CI: 49.8–58.6%), and anxiety of 61.7% (95% CI: 57.3–66.1%), indicating an exceptionally high psychological burden among conflict-affected children. Moderator analyses demonstrated that age (β = 0.43, p < .001), duration of conflict exposure (β = 0.38, p < .001), and parental loss (β = 0.51, p < .001) were significant predictors of increased psychological symptom severity. Furthermore, meta-regression identified an average annual increase of 7.2% in the prevalence of mental health disorders since 2015. Compared with the findings of Alhariri et al. (2021) and Aljalei (2025), which reported prevalence rates ranging from 45% to 50%, the present study demonstrates a substantial escalation in mental health disorders among Yemeni children. The novelty of this study lies in its identification of longitudinal patterns, examination of previously unexplored conflict-specific moderators, and integration of multisite evidence representing the full geographical scope of the Yemeni conflict.
