Abstract

Rice is a major staple food and an important source of carbohydrates. Its safety can be affected by environmental contaminants, including lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd), which may enter agricultural areas through fertilizers, pesticides, industrial activities, and other waste sources. This study evaluated the occurrence and concentrations of Cd and Pb in rice originating from Sidrap Regency. Rice samples were collected from four geographic directions and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The measured Cd concentrations were 0.0387 µg/g in sample A (North), 0.0401 µg/g in sample B (West), 0.0238 µg/g in sample C (South), and 0.0207 µg/g in sample D (East). All Cd concentrations were below the applicable maximum limit. Pb concentrations were 0.1093 µg/g, 0.1255 µg/g, and 0.1661 µg/g for samples A, B, and C, respectively, whereas sample D contained 0.3219 µg/g and exceeded the maximum limit. Thus, Cd concentrations in all examined samples complied with the applicable standard, while the Pb concentration in sample D indicates contamination that warrants continued monitoring of rice safety.
