Abstract

Waste is a major environmental health issue in areas with rapid population growth, such as Perum Nawala, Bekasi. Poorly managed waste accumulation has the potential to pollute soil, water, and air, as well as trigger environmental-based diseases such as diarrhea, acute respiratory infections (ARI), and vector-borne diseases. This study aims to describe the role of waste banks as an alternative solution to improving environmental health through active community participation. The research method used was descriptive analytical with a qualitative phenomenological approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies involving waste bank owners, employees, customers, and the local community. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that Bank Sampah Nawala, established in 2021, implements the 3R principle (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) through a community-based system organized at the neighborhood (RT) level. Management mechanisms include household collection and sorting of organic and inorganic waste at the RT level. In addition to providing economic benefits to customers, waste banks serve as educational platforms for Clean and Healthy Living Behaviors (PHBS) and minimize the potential for environmental pollution, thereby reducing the risk of disease. This program has been shown to increase public awareness of wise waste management and reduce the volume of waste transported to final disposal sites (TPA).
