Abstract

Background: Presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss, is one of the most prevalent chronic conditions among older adults and remains substantially underdiagnosed in Indonesia. Undetected hearing impairment reduces quality of life, accelerates cognitive decline, and increases the risk of social isolation among the elderly. Objective: To improve knowledge of hearing loss and to detect early hearing impairment among elderly patients at Mitra Medika Bandar Klippa General Hospital through education, simple screening, and counseling. Methods: A community service activity was conducted in 2026 involving 50 elderly participants. The stages consisted of preparation, implementation (registration, pre-test, health education, screening using HHIE-S, Whisper Test, and Finger Rub Test, counseling, and post-test), and evaluation. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: The mean knowledge score increased from 58.4 (pre-test) to 84.7 (post-test). Screening showed 30% normal, 38% mild impairment, 22% moderate impairment, and 10% requiring referral to an ENT specialist. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and satisfaction. Conclusion: Education combined with simple screening effectively improves the knowledge and awareness of the elderly regarding early detection of hearing impairment and is feasible for periodic implementation in hospital settings
